Week 31 / Little Olive Update

Well, we are well and truly in baby prep mode now that we're back in Sydney. After returning home we unpacked our bags, and I spent about a million years going through every single baby item we have and taking an inventory. Then I washed a bunch of baby blankets, and began folding and arranging their gear in the drawers... it was such a lovely afternoon 'nesting'. Now that we've worked out a few gaps in our baby gear list, we can start picking up those last items. I also need to start grabbing some things for myself for when I hit recovery mode (maternity pads, black comfy underwear, lotions and potions to soothe all the sore bits that will be aching when bub is here).

Ben is back at work this week, but he had the first half of the week off. This worked out nicely as I had a routine midwife appointment on Monday which he was able to attend. I got my whooping cough jab, we listened to baby's heartbeat and the midwife felt around for bub's position. Baby is head down with their body curling around my left side, feet top right. They've been head down almost for the entire pregnancy (I never felt those kicks to the bladder; little one has been considerate there!) so I'm hoping they'll stay put.

On Tuesday evening we had our first parenting and childbirth session at RPAH, which is where we're birthing our little one. It was the first of seven sessions and provided an overview of the labour process, which I've already read about a lot, but it's great having the midwife/teacher to ask questions to. Our class has a real mix of couples; young and old, planned and unplanned, same sex couples, locals and immigrants. I'm looking forward to getting to know them more. In fact one lovely lady came along to yoga last night!

Ben's been trying to arrange his whooping cough vaccination here, but because there's been an outbreak, there's a real shortage of the vaccine and so we're having trouble tracking down somewhere for him to have it done. If we'd known it would have been like this, we could have had it done in New Zealand. I didn't have a problem as being a pregnant person, I get priority. Hopefully we can get it organised soon.

How far along?
31 weeks.

Symptoms
Good news – those pesky leg cramps are being kept at bay thanks to magnesium tablets! The bad news is that heartburn has been in full force this week. If the burn continues at this level, I will definitely be popping down to the chemist to help myself out. Now I'm trying to eat smaller, more frequent meals (not just because of heartburn, but because my stomach is squished and gets full more easily). My last weird symptom of the week is a ligament stretchy feeling where my legs join my pelvis. It feels a bit like I've been doing the splits all day, or a squat marathon. I especially notice it at night when I turn over. Apparently it might be because bub's noggin is putting a lot of pressure on my joints and nerves down there (according to Dr Google, anyway).

Maternity clothes
Can you believe it, it's been so chilly and rainy here that I haven't been able to wear my usual duds! Lounge pants and big jumpers it is!

Stretch marks
None.

Sleep
That stretchy feeling in my pubic bone area makes shifting around a bit annoying at night, but otherwise it's been pretty good!

Best moment this week
Last night's yoga session was a really good one. A lot of the regular girls I see are slowly disappearing (as they become mothers!) which is really strange! But yeah, it's a good time to just spend time with myself and connect with my body. I feel really at peace with my body and what it needs to do, so hopefully I can continue yoga right up to the end.

Worst moment this week
Sometimes researching baby gear can take soooo much time. I bought a second hand electric breast pump and I've been trying to track down a replacement part (the bit that actually touches your skin) so it's like new. But it takes hours as I don't know what model my unit is, and the parts can be tricky to track etc. It's pretty exhausting sometimes!

Movement
Baby continues to get bigger and stronger. Sometimes when I bend in certain positions I can feel it's wee body there, rather than just feeling tummy in the way. The movements are getting pretty insane too, we've started seeing feet sweep across my tummy (they are just lumps that move around, but I know they're feet). It's the coolest.

Food cravings
Nope, all good!

Anything making you feel sick or queasy?
I sometimes get a little nauseated on the odd day, but it's nothing inhibiting.

Gender
Still no idea. We have our last scan coming up in a couple of weeks, so we wonder if bub might accidentally give it away! Otherwise we're still waiting until baby comes to know the gender for sure.

Belly button in or out?
Still hanging in there.

Happy or moody?
Feeling good!

Looking forward to...
My lovely friend Rhi coming to stay for a few nights! She's here for a teacher's conference. I hope she doesn't mind our tiny abode.

This week's tune:
We've been listening to a lot of Madlib around home, so I'm choosing Slim's Return for some jazzy beats.
